Our WineWorks team are a keen bunch of cyclists, and so we jumped on board with the Whale Trail to sponsor a section of cycleway that passes our Marlborough site.

The Riverlands area was once a food-basket for local Maori, but over the years has been transformed from wetland for food production, into a central hub for wineries, bottling plants and freight logistics – businesses that send Marlborough’s wonderful Sauvignon Blanc to the thirsty wine-drinkers of the world.

The Whale Trail was conceived in the days after the 2016 earthquake which affected communities and industry along the coastline from Picton to Kaikoura. Marlborough winemaker Dr John Forrest shared a vision to turn the disaster into an opportunity to build on the defunct railway line into “the world’s best cycling and walking trail… traversing some of the most beautiful seascapes and pastoral vistas in the world”.

The Whale Trail is a community initiative championed through the Marlborough Kaikōura Trail Trust
